What is play-based learning?
Play-based learning is how young children learn best. It uses play—something all children love—to help them explore, discover, and understand the world around them.
At BPA Children’s Services, we believe learning happens when children are having fun. Through play, children build confidence, grow friendships, and develop important life skills.

Why is play important?
Children don’t just play for fun. While they’re playing, they are:
-
Solving problems (like figuring out how to build a tall tower)
-
Building language (by telling stories or pretending to be someone else)
-
Learning to work together (taking turns, sharing, and listening)
-
Using their imagination (turning a box into a spaceship!)
-
Moving their bodies (which helps with physical development)
Learning through play at BPA
Our educators carefully plan play experiences that match each child’s interests and stage of development. This means children are:
-
Actively involved – they make choices and follow their curiosity
-
Supported by caring adults – educators guide and extend learning as it happens
-
Learning across all areas – including literacy, numeracy, science, and social skills
We balance free play (where children lead) with guided play (where educators join in with purpose). This helps children build the skills they need for school—and for life.
A day at BPA might include…
- Pretending to run a café in the home corner
- Building bridges with blocks and problem-solving with friends
- Exploring nature in the garden
- Drawing maps, writing signs, or reading stories together
- Creating something special with paint, clay, or recycled materials
Every moment matters
Play-based learning means that every moment—big or small—can lead to learning. Whether it’s making a friend, asking a question, or trying something new, we’re here to support your child every step of the way.
Why play matters
In Victoria, play-based learning is part of the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF). This means play isn't just fun—it's also an important way for children to learn and grow.
Research shows that when children learn through play, they become more confident, curious, and ready for school.
At BPA, our educators use this approach every day. We plan fun, hands-on activities that help children build skills in language, thinking, and getting along with others. We make sure every child feels safe, supported, and free to explore.
